KJHK'S DIGITAL ARCHIVE PROJECTDay 1 On the Air

KJHK's musical history resides in its collection of over 10,000 compact discs and 5,000 vinyl LPs. From the station's humble FM beginnings in 1975, countless KJHK students have explored this incredible campus resource. From classic releases to rare 45's, KJHK's music library is a treasure for music fans on campus.

In 2006, KJHK began exploring the possibility of digitally cataloging and audio archiving every item in its collection. This ambitious and costly project would insure that KJHK's library would remain preserved in the event of fire, flood, or theft. It was in 2006 that something incredibly unique happened. An anonymous donor made a sizeable donation to begin this project.

It is extremely rare for a college radio station to receive such generosity, but KJHK has always been an enigma. Through this anonymous donor's contribution, and aided by matching funds through KU's Student Senate, KJHK was able to secure enough funding to begin the Digital Archive Project. The project funding covered costs ranging from hardware and software acquisition to secure digital storage, and even created part time archivist positions for KJHK students to work in, gaining library experience through working with content they knew and loved.

To-date, KJHK students have created a catalogue database of all rock genre albums, have digitally archived the audio of over 1,000 different titles, and steadily work on this project week after week to preserve the musical legacy of the station. Combined with the station's new studio project, KJHK will once again be at the forefront of college radio and broadcast technology.

However, none of this progress could have ever even happened without the generosity of a private donation. Through Student Success and KU Endowment, you have the chance to create countless new opportunities for the students at KJHK. This kind of support is vital to making dream projects a reality at the station. The Digital Archive Project will be an ongoing effort at KJHK for many years to come, and needs support to continue its success.
